Welcome to our first blog!

Despite being town dwellers for most of our adult lives, we had both enjoyed childhoods in the countryside (of Slovakia and Canada) and increasingly felt the pull to a simpler life.

The lockdowns put it all in perspective for us - and although we couldn't do much, they didn't stop us from getting backyard chickens (and designing and building our own coop), getting married or getting a puppy!

Three years was all it took for our lives to change completely- from living in a town center apartment with no garden (although that didn't stop us putting a chicken coop and run on the grass verge...) to living in the countryside, with bees, chickens, pigs, dogs, babies and a whole lot of house renovation we're doing ourselves.

We really have the hens to thank for this amazing life we're now enjoying. Getting backyard chickens was a dream that kept us motivated and gave us some purpose during the first lockdown. Although Peter had always loved working on his cars, designing building the chicken coop/ chicken run was the first larger diy project he had done for some years. Once the first 5 hens arrived, we realised not only how much we longed for a simpler life in the countryside, but that we actually really liked making things ourselves.

It's been quite a journey with the hens since then, and each year has brought new wisdom and experiences to us in this area. We're excited to share more about our hens, cockerels and chicken care regime with you in the coming weeks and months.
